About the website owner
Hi.

This is my chance to ramble in an unprofessional fashion. This about page is basically a diary entry so, unless you're curious about the website owner, you'll probably fall asleep before you get much further. In which case you can return to the main page here: electric cars

Why have I started a website focused on electric cars?

When I was 7 years old I wanted an electric car. But in 1978 there weren't any available in Australia. At the time I had been reading science fiction as well as science books and knew that they were just around the corner. Even on the news, every year, we'd get information on how electric cars were 'just around the corner'. I had no interest in your standard smelly and noisy cars. I was going to wait for a nice clean car.

In the late 70s solar panels were becoming popular. People were installing solar water heaters and the buzz at the time was that solar was going to be the thing that helped electric cars get off the ground.

As electric cars were 'just around the corner' I decided to wait. But the solar car didn't eventuate. And besides, how could I fit my girlfriend in one of those thin lie-down solar powered racing cars? So I waited a bit longer.

At the end of the 80s I didn't bother to get my license as, well, electric cars would be different, right? And besides, they were 'coming soon' so I probably wouldn't have to wait long.

In the 90s I used another form of electrical transport for most of my travelling to and from work - trains. They were easy, convenient and I could work or sleep while travelling. So, while I waited for an electric car to turn up I chose units and houses that were within half an hour walking distance of train stations and enjoyed my daily commute.

In the early 2000s I was shocked to hear that some electric cars were actually going into production. (I had started to get a bit jaded and thought that I'd be waiting another 20 years before an electric car would eventuate) I'd already researched the fact that the big motor companies just didn't want to create an electric car even though most of them had the plans to do so. So the idea that production could start as early as 2003 had me all excited. That would mean they'd get to Australia by 2010!

Unfortunately I also heard that it wasn't feasible to market an electric car that operated with buttons but had to be designed just like a normal car. I'd also read that the state government still required a normal driver's license to drive any car. So, I decided to get my license.

It took awhile but I eventually got my license in 2007! Not actually owning a car yet means I haven't had a chance to use the license much, but I've been informed that electric cars are 'just around the corner' so I'm sure, by 2010, finally, I should have one.

Hmm. If I'd known I would have had to wait over 30 years before I could get an electric car, I probably would have bought a petrol guzzler in 1989. Oh well. I've done my bit for the environment!

So, I've set this site up to not only keep you up-to-date on all the news on electric vehicles and production times but also to keep myself updated. As soon as I hear of a cheap electric sedan or wagon available for sale in Sydney (not a conversion or a hybrid), I'll be there with my credit card!
